The Economic Advantages of Self-Driving Vehicles

With the seemingly inevitable uprising of the self-driving vehicle, gear-heads and car enthusiasts alike are in dismay over the various effects they will have. Their woes may be lessened, however, by the vast array of the potential positive impact these SD cars will have on our economy. In the United States today, drivers see around 30,000 annual deaths resulting from auto accidents annually. The self-driving vehicle aims to reduce this number to nearly 0.
A benefit to society, this effect will also impact the economy by reducing risks related to roadways, reducing auto, life, and health insurance costs, and promoting safer, happier, and more productive workers and citizens. Though some may see this figure as insignificant relative to the total number of deaths annually, this number gets potentiated by the reduction in injuries, accidents, and unlawful behaviors that are seen daily on our roadways.
Apart from the clear benefit of increased safety, drivers will also welcome the newfound time they have available to be productive or social in their vehicles as attention will no longer be placed on physically driving the automobile. By taking the driver's hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, we will see much more time available for various leisure activities such as reading or engaging with friends or kids.
Many believe that commutes will be more time-consuming due to the SD cars following road rules to the dot, but this may be appeased by the significant reduction in traffic and accidents which clog up our roads every day. This benefits our economy because it allows workers to have more time in a day, be happier, and be more productive.
A significant factor in the economic advantage of SD cars is also the amount of buzz they generate in our technology and automobile sectors. Competitors such as Google and Uber are clawing at each other's throats over the acquisition of some of the most advanced technology known to date. This competition fuels the economy by stimulating job growth for positions manufacturing, designing, testing, and applying these technologies.
This competition is also beneficial to the economy because companies in the competition will always seek to make the most of the highest quality products for the lowest prices to consumers. Lastly, this battle for the release of SD cars facilitates innovation and excitement aimed to accommodate this new trend, which will inevitably lead to further competition, developments, and products.
